About Tilehall

Tilehall is a small, independent site for mahjong solitaire and plain-English guides to the four-player game. It is free to use and has no accounts.

Why we built it

We wanted a calm place to play: a game that feels like tiles on a real table rather than a busy web page. The tiles are large and high in contrast so they are easy to read on any screen, every board is dealt so it can be cleared, and undo has no limit.

The guides are written for people meeting the game for the first time, whether that is at a new club, a family gathering or a box of tiles found in a closet. We explain the classic Chinese and Hong Kong game and point out where American mah jongg differs.

About the tiles

Every tile on this site is drawn in code rather than copied from a photo or another game. The Chinese characters on the tiles come from Noto Serif CJK, an open-source typeface, and the text is set in TeX Gyre Schola, a revival of the classic Century Schoolbook. Both are used under the licenses listed below.
