A snowflake, one pair at a time
Our winter board arranges the tiles into a snowflake with four arms on a cool slate-blue table. It plays like any mahjong solitaire game: match two identical free tiles to take them off, and clear the whole snowflake to win.
The arms make this board different from the others. Each one is its own short row, so you have four separate places to work at once, and the tiles at the tip of each arm are free from the start. A board takes most people ten to fifteen minutes.
How to play
- Click or tap a free tile. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open.
- Click its twin. If the faces match, both tiles come off the board.
- Any flower matches any flower, and any season matches any season.
- Keep going until the snowflake is gone. Use Hint if you are stuck, and Undo as often as you like.
The center of the snowflake is stacked highest, and every arm leads into it. Work each arm in from its tip, and take tiles off the center stack whenever they come free so the arms can meet.
A game for long evenings
Winter is when many people take up mahjong, solitaire and the four-player game alike. If you would like to learn the real thing this season, start with what mah jongg is, then our guide on how to play mahjong.
Questions
Can every winter board be cleared?
Yes. Like all our boards, the snowflake is dealt so that at least one order of moves clears it. If you run out of moves, undo a few and try another pair, or shuffle the tiles that are left.
Is it free?
Yes, and there is nothing to download or sign up for. It works on computers, tablets and phones.
Are there other seasonal boards?
Yes. There is a Thanksgiving pumpkin and a Christmas tree, and all of them stay up year-round. See them all on our holiday mahjong page.
