Every board on Tilehall plays by the same mahjong solitaire rules. The holiday boards change the shape of the stack and the color of the table to suit the season. They are free, they stay up all year, and every one of them is dealt so it can be cleared.
The boards
- Thanksgiving MahjongA round pumpkin of tiles on a warm harvest table. Play it over the long weekend.
- Christmas MahjongA Christmas tree of tiles with a star on top, on a pine-green table.
- Winter MahjongA four-armed snowflake on a cool slate-blue table, for long evenings.
What makes a holiday board different
The tiles and the rules stay the same. What changes is the layout, and the layout changes the game more than you might expect. The Christmas tree is tall and narrow, so the tiles at the top open up first and the wide rows near the bottom come last. The pumpkin is round and wide, with long middle rows that only open from the ends. The snowflake has four short arms that you can work on separately before they meet in the middle.
If one of them feels too hard, it is the order of play and not the deal: every board can be cleared. Undo back to your last choice and take the other pair.
A quick reminder of the rules
Match two identical free tiles to remove them. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open. Any flower matches any flower, and any season matches any season. The full rules, with tips, are in how to play mahjong solitaire.
Prefer the classic? The everyday board has four layouts, including the traditional 144-tile Turtle.
